THE 1st ASIA DAIRY GOAT CONFERENCE

Goats are distributed in all the five continents with the largest number in Asia. Although dairy goat farming is prevalent in many industrialized countries, it is often associated with smallholder and subsistence farming systems in developing countries. The robustness of goats to produce in harsh climate with low quality roughages plays a vital role in food security and poverty alleviation in smallholder farmers and its relevance and importance would increased in the future due to ongoing global warming. There is a growing interest in dairy goat farming in Asia due to the rapid increasing local demands for goat’s milk and its products, however, there is a lack of documented information on goat breeds and dairy goat production systems in Asia, and on the downstream industries for goat milk processing.

The 1st ASIA DAIRY GOAT CONFERENCE, organized by the Institute of Tropical Agriculture, Universiti Putra Malaysia (http://www.ita.upm.edu.my technically supported by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO): http://www.fao.org/ and the International Dairy Federation (IDF): http://www.fil-idf.org/, to provide a platform for exchange of technical information and networking for promotion of dairy goat farming in Asia. Experts from developed and developing countries will be invited to present topical and relevant topics in dairy goats farming and goat milk processing. In addition, the formation of Asia Dairy Goats Network will be discussed and a framework developed during the conference. The objective of this Network will be to promote North-South and South-South cooperation to enhance technical knowledge and skills of farmers and extension workers, integrate farmers with the market chain, and to further goat milk industry.
