Precision goat farming-current opportunities and future challenges
Hellenic Agricultural Organization, Greece
Following my formal education, I completed two post-doctoral courses, on ruminant welfare and innovation in housing systems. All the while, having worked as an adjunct lecturer at Veterinary Schools, I enjoyed introducing students to animal husbandry, welfare and precision technologies. In 2017, I was appointed as a researcher at the Research Institute of Animal Science of the Hellenic Agricultural Organization “Demeter” in the field of Farm Animal Husbandry. Since then, I have participated in more than 35 research projects, on elected as secretary of the Commission on Precision Livestock Farming of the EAAP and participate as a member of a doctoral advisory committee on PLF technologies in transhumant goat flocks. Also, I participate as representative of Greece at the Collaborative Working Group on Sustainable Animal Production of the EU Standing Committee on Agricultural Research and as a member of the EU CAP Network Focus Group “Alternative Solutions for Livestock Product Differentiation”.

From lab to barn – human-goat interactions and future avenues for better animal husbandry
Research Institute for Farm Animal Biology (FBN), Germany
Christian Nawroth is a researcher at the Research Institute for Farm Animal Biology (FBN) in Dummerstorf, Germany, with a focus on how animals perceive and interact with their physical and social environments. His research centers on the cognitive abilities of farm animals (such as goats, horses, pigs, and sheep) and zoo animals (including great apes and penguins), how this knowledge can ultimately be used to improve their management conditions and human-animal interactions.
After earning his PhD in Halle, Germany, in 2015, Nawroth became a research fellow at Queen Mary University of London from 2015 to 2017. From 2017 to 2021, he held postdoctoral research positions at FBN and Agroscope in Switzerland, working on a project examining the impact of domestication and selective breeding on learning and cognition in goats. Since 2022, he has been a researcher at FBN, focusing on innovative methods and technologies to assess goat cognition. He is also committed to Open Science practices and sharing research findings with the public.
