Goats of the World and World of Goats – Emerging from the Shadow of COVID-19 The IGA virtual conference is almost here! If you are an IGA member, then registration is FREE. Registration is €25 for non-IGA members. Currently, an IGA membership is $55 (about €47). Save €25 (about $29) and join IGA today. The conference will take place on November 16, 2021 from 2 pm to 6 pm European Time (Paris time).
Goat breeding, as part of the livestock sector is a key contributor to food security, nutrition and livelihoods, especially for the world’s most vulnerable populations. Since the global outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020, the world’s goat production and the life of the farmers have been severely affected. The aim of the conference is to investigate the negative impacts (current and potential) of the pandemic e.g. reduced access to animal feeds, inputs and services; reduced processing capacities; compromised storage and conservation options; difficulties in inland and international transportation; animal health problems because of reduced testing and diagnostic capacity; lack of animal disease control programmes. Reports will be delivered on national and regional levels (by Country Representatives and Regional Directors of IGA), hoping to get a global overview by the end of the conference. The organisers would be more than happy to see some actions, how to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 on the goat sector.

Systems of livestock production in developing countries are becoming progressively more intensified as producers and traders respond to increasing demands from consumers in urbanized societies for milk, meat, other livestock products and animals. This includes the challenges of increasing productivity without degrading feed and genetic resources, and of ensuring that diseases of a transboundary or zoonotic nature are early recognized and brought under control. Increasing demand can only be met through the selection of animals that produce more meat and milk and show disease resistance and heat tolerance; the optimal utilization of local resources that simultaneously protects animal biodiversity and the environment; and the protection of animals and their caretakers from diseases. The EAAP Virtual Meeting will be held on-line from December 1st to 4th, 2020. Registration is open! The meeting will facilitate focused and significant discussions about the latest animal science topics. Looking forward to have you on-board! Last July 31st Clara Rúa, IGA Regional Director (RD) for South America, held a virtual meeting with the current IGA Country Representatives (CR) from Colombia (Mónica Cardozo), Bolivia (Angelika Stemmer), Peru (Guadalupe Huamán and Irma Celi), Brazil (Livio Costa) and the CR candidates from Ecuador and Venezuela. This virtual meeting was the first one organized under Clara’s regional leadership. The main objective of the meeting was to learn more about the current position of the CR regarding their small ruminant-related activities (specifically goats) in their respective countries, in addition to the potential formation of a regional work team to respond to the commitments assumed as IGA representatives in their own country. An agenda was agreed for future virtual meetings convened by the RD to advance different topics and proposals to be developed, and to achieve greater interactions with other CRs, RDs and the IGA board members. The meeting was also attended by Davinia Sánchez and Jean-Marie Luginbuhl, two members of the IGA Board who have significantly heightened the commitment of IGA to the CRs and the Regional Directors.
