The first edition of the Handbook of Milk of Non-Bovine Mammals was so popular, that since published in 2006, the book has been translated into Spanish and Chinese, which were published in 2010 and 2011, respectively. Furthermore, the handbook has been adopted as the textbook for research by Harvard Medical School. Because of so much global demand from readers/scientists, Wiley-Blackwell published an updated 2nd edition of the book this year. We would like to welcome our newest IGA institutional member, the American Goat Federation. The American Goat Federation works to unify, improve and advance the American goat industry in an effort to assist producers achieve maximum success. AGF represents the interests of more than 150 organizations and thousands of producers engaged in the sustainable production and marketing of goat milk, meat, fiber, breeding stock and grazing services across the United States. The American Dairy Goat Association, American Boer Goat Association, American Angora Goat Breeders Association, Cashmere Goat Association, North American Savannah Association, Alabama Meat Goat & Sheep Producers, and the Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers are all members of AGF. Members can participate in government and research surveys that can affect the goat industry, receive reduced fees for AGF Seminars, and help support various activities of other goat-related organizations. AGF promotes the development of all segments of the goat industry including dairy, meat, pack and fiber, by encouraging sound public policy, enhancing production and marketing of goat products, and promoting research beneficial to our member organizations and all producers. The First Edition of the Dairy Goat Production Handbook from Langston University has been published and is now available. The breadth and depth of topics and information included in this book will serve all dairy goat producers from those persons who raise and milk only a few does in their backyard to producers operating a large commercial dairy. Upon perusing the book, the reader will see that experts in all areas of production were invited to author chapters. Excellent pictures and charts accompany the narrative of each chapter. Production of safe, wholesome dairy goat milk and milk products is the aim of all dairy goat producers. The editors and authors hope that this handbook serves to assist in fulfilling that aim. In our September 2012 IGA Newsletter we told you about a great book, A Guide to Starting a Commercial Goat Dairy, written by Carol Delaney. Now you can download this great resource for free. Turning a passion into a viable business is a line-in-the-sand decision, and a new book by Northeast SARE Farmer Grant Specialist Carol Delaney, A Guide to Starting a Commercial Goat Dairy, covers what farmers should consider when planning a goat dairy startup. It also fills a gap—there are many periodicals and books with information about cow dairying, and this adds some needed weight on the small ruminant side of the scale. Milk is nature’s most complete food, and dairy products are considered to be the most nutritious foods of all. Several books have been published on the subject of milk and dairy products; however, these books contain only partial or limited coverage on the subject and usually focus primarily on cow milk and human milk. Milk and Dairy Products in Human Nutrition is the first book to contain comprehensive coverage of all available dairy species for human consumption around the world. The Editors have assembled a team of 61 internationally renowned experts to contribute to this exhaustive volume, which contains essential cutting-edge information for dairy scientists, nutritionists, food scientists, allergy specialists, and health professionals, as well as dairy consumers worldwide. He was chosen to serve on the Heifer International Board of Directors as an At-Large Representative residing in the Asia/South Pacific region in November 2012. Dr. Devendra said that he was pleasantly surprised at the appointment and felt deeply honored to join this prestigious development organization. He is excited to be part of its noble mission and values to promote agricultural development in small farm systems and improve the livelihoods of poor rural communities. IGA regrets to inform its members of the passing of Dr. R. Ashley Robinson, a leading advocate for small ruminants in international development. Dr. Robinson was a native of New Zealand. He earned his bachelor's degree in veterinary science from the University of Sydney in Australia, and his master's in public health and doctorate in veterinary microbiology from the University of Minnesota, where he was a faculty member for 20 years. Dr. Robinson came out of retirement to serve as Associate Dean of Pre-Clinical Programs at Western University School of Veterinary Medicine in Davis, California. He was active in development work with FAO, Heifer International and many projects, especially in the Middle East and South Asia. “He was internationally renowned both as an epidemiologist and an educator. His expertise in zoonotic diseases, food safety, public health and international veterinary medicine has had an impact on veterinarians around the world,” says Shirley Johnston, DVM, PhD, Vice President of University Advancement at Western University of Health Sciences. |
