Obituary – Dr. Pu Jiabi
Former Director of Heifer China
I am sad to send this message out. Dr. Pu Jiabi, former Country Director for Heifer China, and IGA Board member, passed away peacefully last Saturday, June 4th, at 94. He was cremated, and his family held a brief funeral ceremony. I expressed our respect and made a memorial speech at the ceremony.
Dr. Pu worked as a breeding expert in the Sichuan Provincial Bureau of Animal Husbandry in China for about 40 years. He made significant contributions to breeding and improving livestock and poultry in Sichuan. In 1984, Dr. Pu visited Heifer International as a Sichuan Provincial Bureau of Animal Husbandry delegation member. He then submitted some project proposals, of which three were approved for funding by Heifer.
In 1985, Heifer officially started projects in China, and by 1989, Heifer established the Heifer China Office. Dr. Pu served as Chief Representative and later became Country Director. With his leadership, the Heifer China program expanded from Sichuan to a dozen other provinces or autonomous regions, assisting nearly 100 thousand families. Heifer China was one of five country programs evaluated by the Hilton Humanitarian Prize Committee and contributed to Heifer winning the prize in 2004 when Dr. Pu retired from Heifer.
Dr. Pu made many outstanding and lasting contributions to the Heifer China Program. As his student and former assistant, I’d like to share his saying, “My 20 years working in Heifer was my peak time in my career. I was very lucky to meet all leaders, colleagues, and friends through Heifer.”
I was fortunate to visit him and his wife on May 28th. We chatted for about an hour and a half. Though he could not speak, he could nod his head and smile. But I cannot believe he passed away just one week later.
I know many of you were his friend or colleague. Please share your comments below if you would like to share a story or just express your sadness about Dr. Pu’s passing.
