Written by Juan Capote, IGA past president In 2016, Beth Miller as IGA president and I were invited by Prof. Binyun Cao from Northwest A&F University to participate the following year in a conference concerning the dairy goat industry. Beth Miller could not attend due to scheduling conflicts, so I went as IGA representative and also as Honorary President of the conference Organizing Committee. The conference, titled “The International Conference of Dairy Goat Industry Development & International Symposium on Dairy Goat Industry Technology” took place on October 10 to 12, 2017 in Quianxian, Shaanxi province. During this trip, I visited three large factories: one just completed, another one in construction and another one in the planning stages. It was my 6th visit to China as an IGA officer. In addition, I had been the guide of a Chinese delegation who visited Spain in 2015. Title: Goat health - nutrition and disease prevention

The 18th Japan National Summit, entitled “Ecological Life and Agriculture with Goats,” took place on November 12-13, 2016 in Aso, Kumamoto. The Aso area was severely damaged by the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake with a magnitude 6.2 foreshock on April 14 followed by a magnitude 7.0 main-shock on April 15, which killed more than 50 people and evacuated 44,000.
The organizers faced difficulties in implementation of the Summit this year; however, they decided to make the Summit as a symbol of recovery. With their strong tie and efforts, the Summit was successfully conducted. Despite harsh accessibility due to reconstruction and damaged roads, the Summit welcomed more than 280 participants from all over the country. Dear IGA Members, As we prepare for 2017, IGA’s new Board of Directors is planning to make our organization stronger and better equipped to meet the needs of our members. The past four years under the leadership of Dr. Juan Capote brought increased membership, as well as a higher international profile and a renewed dedication to the use of goats to improve the lives of millions of rural poor. IGA produced an exceptional study, Scaling Up Successful Practices for Sustainable Small Ruminant Production for IFAD: http://www.iga-goatworld.com/scaling-upsuccessful-practices.html. We must continue to develop new areas to share IGA expertise. The recent International Goat Conference in Antalya Turkey was a great success, from excellent presentations and wonderful technical tours to the new friendships and professional collaborations that developed. Again, I want to thank Conference Chair Dr. Irfan Daskiran, the host country committee, and the IGA Scientific Committee led by Dr. Lucia Sepe. The proceedings will become available soon, and a special edition of Small Ruminant Research will feature the best papers and posters. "Sustainable global food security through efficient sheep and goat production"How must small ruminant production efficiency be improved to sustainably meet the needs of the world’s growing human population for food? Global ruminant livestock production is inherently inefficient, and small ruminant farming is frequently uneconomic, or fails to alleviate poverty in a welfare-friendly manner. Our Ninth International Sheep Veterinary Congress will identify opportunities for improvement in the efficiency of small ruminant production to sustainably meet the needs of the world’s growing population for food. Distinguished scientists, researchers, goat breeders and experts worldwide, We respectfully request your support for our upcoming meeting of major goat breeders, enthusiasts, and goat experts of the Animal Science Research Institute of Iran (www.asri.ir) as host of the this event, National Animal Breeding and animal products promotion Center (www.abc.org.ir) and National Organization for Nomads Affairs (www.ashayer.ir) on January 27, 2016. The goal is to propose a World Goat Day, with the help of the International Goat Association, so your kind support will be highly appreciated. Policy papers, benchmarking analysis by scientists and senior experts, and interesting debate topics by nomadic and rural goat keepers will be presented. International scientists and breeders are welcome.
