Former Director of Heifer China
Dear Friends, I am sad to send this message out. Dr. Pu Jiabi, former Country Director for Heifer China, and IGA Board member, passed away peacefully last Saturday, June 4th, at 94. He was cremated, and his family held a brief funeral ceremony. I expressed our respect and made a memorial speech at the ceremony. Dr. Pu worked as a breeding expert in the Sichuan Provincial Bureau of Animal Husbandry in China for about 40 years. He made significant contributions to breeding and improving livestock and poultry in Sichuan. In 1984, Dr. Pu visited Heifer International as a Sichuan Provincial Bureau of Animal Husbandry delegation member. He then submitted some project proposals, of which three were approved for funding by Heifer. The end of any year is a good time for reflection and assessment, but this has been a year like no other. We have all been touched by the COVID-19 pandemic, and many of us have lost family, friends, and colleagues. As more people worked from home and faced recurring travel restrictions, IGA members, and Board endeavored to provide more online content and opportunities. The feedback so far has been enthusiastic, with requests for more content in more languages, and we agree! Check the website or social media for updates. The International Goat Association typically holds the International Goat Conference every four years, but COVID required that we postpone it. The new dates are October 3-8, 2021, and it will still be in Eger, Hungary, but check the IGA website for updates. Here is the ICG Conference website: www.icg2020.org. The IGA Board of Directors held two virtual meetings this year, on March 24 and October 2, plus a Strategic Planning meeting on December 7. I give special thanks to all of the Board members who have agreed to extend their terms an additional year due to COVID and who also participated in our online and Zoom discussions with great enthusiasm and insight. The new IGA Strategic Plan will be posted on the website once finalized, and it will guide us through the changing world we will find in 2021 and onwards. I want to commend the Strategic Planning Committee, chaired by Davinia Sánchez, and committee members Jean-Marie Luginbuhl, Dilip Bhandari, and Paula Menzies for guiding this crucial process for IGA to increase activity, visibility, and impact. Every year the International Goat Association officially recognizes the most active Regional Directors (RD) and Country Representatives (CR). RDs and CRs are an essential part of IGA, and we sincerely grateful for all that they do: promoting IGA and our International Conference on Goats, organizing in-country and regional conferences, soliciting new members, preparing country reports for IGA’s Newsletter, etc. The Regional Director & Country Representative Committee recently selected the individuals who have done an outstanding job representing IGA in their region or country during the past year. We wish to congratulate them for their involvement and successes. The 2019 IGA Achievement Award recipients are Hector Mario Andrade-Montemayor (RD for Mexico, Caribbean & Central America) and Farhad Mirzaei (CR for Iran). The Annual European College of Small Ruminant Health Management (ECSRHM) conference took place in Warsaw (Poland) on May 11th 2019 at Warsaw University of Life Science – SGGW, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. The conference was organized by ECSRHM, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of WULS-SGGW, Polish Society of Veterinary Sciences – PTNW, International Goat Association – IGA, and Warsaw Chamber of Veterinary Surgeons. Juan Boo is a senior research fellow of the Institute of Tropical Agriculture and Food Security (ITAFoS), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). He obtained his B. Agric. Sc. from the University of Malaya, his M.Sc. from James Cook University of Northern Queensland, Australia and his Ph.D. from the University of Alberta, Canada. The IGA Board of Directors is pleased to announce two great new Country Representatives (CR) and a wonderful new Regional Director (RD). They have each demonstrated their commitment to IGA and knowledge of the goat sector.
These recently elected Country Representatives are María Eva Muñoz Mejías (Spain) and Jon Chirisa (Zimbabwe). The new Regional Director is Dr. Juan Boo Liang.   Recognition of IGA’s Most Active CRs and RDs

Introduction With an estimated number of 8 million heads in the 70s, the Morocco goat sector currently numbers 6.2 million animals. This significant drop in number is due to the years of drought that the country experienced during the 1980s, but also to the abandonment of this activity towards other more profitable agricultural activities.  Francisco obtained a Ph.D. in Animal Science and Sustainable Management as well a degree in Technical Agricultural Engineering from the University of Seville. He also received a degree in Environmental Sciences from the University Pable de Olavide.
Francisco’s research experience is focused in the field of sustainable management of small ruminant systems and the marketing of their products. He has developed his work in different research centers and universities, including the University of Seville (Spain), the Agency for Agricultural Research in Sardinia (Italy), the French Livestock Institute (France) and in his current research center, the Andalusian Institute of Agricultural Research and Training. |
